Our Story

Basilei. In ancient language, it means royalty.

We chose it for two reasons. The first is more obvious - it speaks to the standard we hold ourselves to, and the experience we want every customer to have. The second is more personal. It speaks to inheritance. To something passed down. To a gift we didn't earn so much as receive.

Our father is not a confectioner by title. He is a problem-solver by nature - someone drawn to complexity, to the question of how things work. He found his medium in sugar, butter, and heat. In the precise moment when raw ingredients stop being separate things and become something entirely new. He spent years experimenting, refining, understanding the alchemy of confectionery at a level most people never think to explore.

We watched. We tasted. We learned without knowing we were learning.

Years later, Marcos and Istvan took what they had inherited and decided to share it. Basilei was born at Cape Town markets and events — built on word of mouth, on people tasting something and coming back for more. Over several years, it has grown into a full range of handcrafted fudges, nougats, caramels and marshmallows, each made in small batches using the techniques and principles our father instilled.

Nothing is rushed. Nothing is outsourced. Every piece is made by hand, from boil to cut, with the same obsessive attention to detail that defined how Basilei began.

Our ambition is simple and hard — to make the finest sweet confections we are capable of making, and to keep getting better.

That is the inheritance we intend to honour and to share with you.
